Workplace drug Testing detects greater usage

Drug detections in the workplace have seen a significant increase since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to drug and alcohol testing company Resultz Group New Zealand. Managing Director Kyly Coombes says COVID-19 has had an impact on workplace drug testing, and there is a growing popularity of saliva testing.

“Workplace drug use has spiked in the wake of COVID-19, with many attributing this trend to the heightened stress caused by the ongoing pandemic and the reduced frequency of testing in various workplaces.

“Amidst the Omicron variant, some organizations took measures to limit the number of personnel on-site, while others had to halt testing due to an insufficient workforce. Consequently, individuals who engage in drug use have managed to go undetected during this period. The resumption of testing has brought to light an alarming increase in detection rates.”

While drug testing may not be the primary concern for all businesses given the current climate, it remains critical for maintaining a safe and hazard-free work environment. The presence of employees under the influence of drugs or alcohol poses unnecessary risks to both themselves and their colleagues. The likelihood of workplace accidents escalates dramatically when employees are impaired by substances.

In the event of a positive drug test, the response varies depending on the industry and the level of health and safety risks involved. High-risk workplaces commonly adopt a zero-tolerance policy. However, in a majority of cases, employers opt to retain the employee and adopt a supportive approach in guiding them towards seeking the necessary assistance. Checks and balances are subsequently implemented to ensure a drug-free workplace, while employees are well-informed about potential outcomes should they test positive again.

Kyly highlights the increased adoption of saliva drug testing for cannabis detection, as opposed to urine tests. “Saliva tests have a detection window of approximately 12 hours, whereas urine tests can detect drug use for up to 8-10 days,” she says.

By utilizing this approach, only employees who are most likely to be under the influence during work hours are identified. Saliva testing proves particularly beneficial for businesses with a more relaxed stance on recreational cannabis use while still prioritizing a safe working environment by ensuring employees are not impaired on the job. Resultz Group extends its drug testing services throughout New Zealand, including meth testing for residential properties.

Trained technicians conduct testing in full compliance with industry standards. The team manages the entire consent process and delivers ongoing guidance and support to both workplaces and employees.
