A new biography reveals the private man behind one of the twentieth century's most influential international leaders: Dag Hammarskjöld.

Writers and academics have spent more than sixty years analyzing Dag Hammarskjöld's accomplishments. Award-winning author and biographer Sara Causey believes they've been myopically focused on Hammarskjöld's career to the exclusion of anything else.

For decades, Hammarskjöld has been remembered as the quiet Swedish diplomat who transformed the office of Secretary-General, expanded United Nations peacekeeping, and received the Nobel Peace Prize following his death during the Congo Crisis.
Causey argues that those feats, while extraordinary, tell only part of the story.
"I think we've inherited wooden images," she noted. "Dag has been portrayed as cold, intellectual, aloof, and unknowable. But those depictions are patently untrue. The world remembers the diplomat; I wanted to reveal the human being."
Drawing upon meticulous research and Hammarskjöld's own writings, Simply Dag rejects the image of an untouchable historical icon. Instead, it presents a man who climbed mountains, carried poetry as readily as diplomatic cables, wrestled with impossible moral questions, laughed with close friends, cherished solitude, and quietly accepted that public service might ultimately cost him his life.
Causey, whose previous biography Decoding the Unicorn: A New Look at Dag Hammarskjöld received recognition from both the International Book Awards and the Nonfiction Book Awards, says Simply Dag represents more of the deliberate shift she's made from writing about Hammarskjöld toward writing alongside him.
"Simply Dag isn't a book that dryly explains Dag Hammarskjöld's career or that analyzes every nuance of old UN documents," Causey explained. "It's an invitation to spend time with him. My hope is that readers finish the last page feeling less as though they've studied a historical figure and more as though they've known an extraordinary human being."
